Natural Dyeing With Mushrooms

Join us for a workshop exploring the unexpected and wonderful realms of using mushrooms as natural dyes.

FungiCo, in collaboration with Alma Funga Bioproducts, will be running this workshop all about the chemistry of natural dyeing using mushrooms.

Natural dyes are obtained from natural sources, many of plant origin, such as roots, bark and leaves. However, the lesser studied Fungi Kingdom also contains many types of mushrooms that can be used for natural dyeing.

This workshop will teach you the following:

- How to extract dyes from mushrooms

- How to choose mushrooms based on dye properties (wild and cultivated)

- The uptake of pigments by different textiles and paper

- The effect of pH and mordants on the dye process.

Suited to both those who wish to learn more about mycology - the scientific study of fungi - and for those wanting to get started or branch out on their natural dye journey.

This workshop will focus on dyeing textiles and paper with mushrooms, and will include demonstrations and discussion. We will delve into the chemistry behind the mushroom dyeing process, with a talk and Q&A with special guest, Claudia Carrasco (Alma Funga Bioproducts).

This event is part of National Science Week 2021 and is supported by Inspiring the ACT.

Tickets are $15 + booking fee.
