Creating a Garden for the Canberra Climate

  • Canberra Environment Centre Cnr Lawson Crescent and Lennox Crossing, Acton 2601 (map)

Are you making the most of your garden in Canberra’s unique climate? Are you flummoxed by your plants having to cope with frosty cold winters as well as hot dry summers? In this introductory workshop you will learn how to set up your garden so that it thrives year round. Benjamin Taylor from Good Ground Horticulture will take you through a simple process that will enable good gardening in Canberra’s sometimes harsh climate.

This workshop will give you an overview of good garden care in Canberra. Ben will cover soils, watering and planting as well as discussing how Canberra’s current and future climate will impact your garden.

- Soil: how to work with Canberra's soils, seasonal soil care, best mulching practice, and how to rejuvenate water-repellent soils

- Water: capturing water, best watering practice for different groups of plants, grouping plants by their water needs (hydro-zoning) and methods for deeply recharging your soil's water holding capacity.

- Plants: best planting techniques, when to plant, planting for frost and heat, strategic trees for summer shade and winter windbreaks, protecting your vegetable patch, and selecting beautiful & hardy local native plants.

$30 plus booking fee
