Cultivating Healthy Soil

  • Canberra Environment Centre Cnr Lennox Crossing and Lawson Crescent Acton (map)

Often overlooked and sometimes forgotten, healthy soils are the key to growing successful, nutrient dense fruit and veggies. This workshop is about growing the best, most nutrient dense veggies you can without using pesticides or chemical fertilisers.

Starting with the basics of soil microbiology and an overview of why nutrient density is important, gardening enthusiast Gurkan Yeniceri will cover different methods of measuring soil quality and nutrient density in the backyard and a variety of techniques for improving soil quality. Learn about microbial innoculents for compost, weed fertilisers and compost tea, worm farms, mulching and mineral supplements. We’ll also talk about different minerals and their benefits to human health.

If you’re interested in solving the great mystery of why some crops flourish and others don’t in a kitchen garden (hint: nutrient deficiency), a keen experimental Canberra gardener looking to make the most out of their garden or just interested in growing the tastiest apples, apricots, tomatoes and lettuces out there, this workshop will provide you with ideas and tips about keeping your soil healthy and ready for a summer bounty.
