Backyard Aquaponics

  • Canberra Environment Centre Cnr Lennox Crossing and Lawson Crescent Acton ACT 2601 (map)

Aquaponics combines hydroponics and aquaculture in a no waste, closed loop system where fish manure acts as the fertiliser for growing veggies. Set up correctly, backyard aquaponics can be more efficient than regular gardening; it uses less water, produces more crops per metre and crops can grow faster than in a regular garden. Not to mention that you could also have your own supply of fish and yabbies to eat.

Our workshop presenter, Gürkan Yeniçeri, will walk you through the basics of everything you need to know about setting up and maintaining your own system, from swirl filters and pumps to wicking beds. Gürkan will also share his tips and tricks for reducing running costs, including how to make your own fish food and fertiliser. There will be plenty of time for more complex questions as well.

Please note that in the event of community transmission of COVID-19 in the ACT region the Canberra Environment Centre reserves the right to either adapt the workshop to online or cancel the event and refund all ticketholders at our discretion.

Please observe good hygiene and social distancing during this workshop and do not attend if you have been feeling unwell.
