Garden update - April
Last month wrapped up with lots of activities in the garden as we turned beds from summer towards the autumn and winter crops. Summer well and truly held on this season but we all know that the first frost will be hitting us soon.
Corn and tomatoes were replaced with garlic and broad beans. Trellis covered beans were tidied and swapped out with a variety of pea seeds – sugar snap, snow peas and purple podded beauties. Plenty of leafy greens were added (some even survived the snails!) and some winter pollinators as well.
To go with all the above ground care there was plenty of love given to the soil. Compost and worm castings were added to various beds and all new crops watered in with worm leachate or liquid seaweed.
A healthy garden ecosystem is so much more than the plants and soil though. We also welcomed in some new gardeners in our weekend ‘come and try’ sessions. And were lucky enough to have the expertise and experience of local permaculture gardening superstars Gürkan Yeniçeri and Dr Cally Brennan as well.
If you are keen to cultivate connections in the garden, get your hands in the dirt and pick up a tip or two I’d love to connect at a weekly session – Thursdays in school term 9.30-11am – drop in when you can. Learn more about the Gungaderra Community Garden.
