How to Repair a Puncture on a Bicycle

Last week the ReCyclery held their first ever online workshop covering how to fix a bicycle puncture. We chose this topic because one of the most common problems that bicycle owners come across is a punctured inner tube.

For those who missed the workshop, we thought we’d provide some guidance on what to do if you get a puncture, including recommended videos and a list of what to include in your puncture repair kit.

Fixing a puncture

Fixing a puncture requires knowing how to remove and install a wheel, how to remove and install a tyre, and how to repair a punctured tube.

The following Park Tool videos are excellent resources to help you learn how to do each of these steps.

We recommend pretending you have a puncture and practicing the process of removing and installing a wheel and tyre on your bicycle. Then, if you get an unexpected puncture you will have confidence in knowing what to do.

What to have in your puncture repair kit

1. Spare tube that is the correct size for your bicycle wheel
2. Tyre levers
3. Puncture repair kit
4. Bicycle pump
5. Adjustable spanner or a 15mm spanner, unless your wheels are attached with quick release skewers

If you would like further guidance on fixing a puncture, please drop in at one of our Cycle Jam events and we will be able to walk you through the process. Our Cycle Jams are weekly meetups for anyone who wants to fix or maintain a bicycle. Bring along a bike to fix, or just come along to watch and learn. Cycle Jam is run by volunteers who will work with you to give you the skills to fix your bike. Please note: Our regular Cycle Jam events are currently on hold and will resume when the lockdown in the ACT ends.
